Why finding your style is extremely important for self expression

Why finding your style is extremely important for self expression

Having a style is much more than simply keeping up with the latest fashion trends. One is deeply rooted in your soul and the other is an uprooted version.

Fashion is like keeping up with the Joneses or Kardashians. In constant flow, a chaotic rhythm that changes the choices of people that you’ll never meet. Yet there is a positive in this ever changing stream.

It shows that humans are constantly trying and combining new things. This echoes the need to expand towards the horizon. For this reason, we are where we are today. The constant need to push the needle forwards.

Yet, where it can be disastrous is in what I mentioned above, it uproots yourself from your soul.

Finding a style that expresses your true colours, is one of the most powerful tools you can have in your arsenal. It’s a mirror of what’s deep down in the depths of who you are. It communicates confidence and courage in showing these colours to everyone around you.

Why it’s so Important to find your style

As hinted at, your style is a reflection of your soul. Similar to looking into still water and seeing a reflection. It says a lot about you and your character, more than you would think.

The way the outfit flows, the colours chosen, the material it’s made from, the quality of the material and cut of each piece. When these come together, you begin to gain a sense of flow and complexity that someone without style isn’t able to see but feel.

With all of these things and more in mind, hopefully you can start to see how it can reflect something similar to the soul.

Just know, I say the above lightly. It’s impossible to replicate your soul let alone an image of it through a style alone. This is simply one piece of the puzzle.

back to why.

By really expressing yourself in a coherent way through clothes, another portal to your inner self opens. There will be those who can see into it and those who don’t care much, walking on by. But this isn’t the point.

We want to allow a path to open for your creative energy to flow through and out of. What’s a better way than the way you present yourself? Your work or hobby comes close, but style is a way to show it off as long as you want.

You can be sitting at home, in a relaxed fit or out and about looking smart.

A creative outlook that does not open for just an hour or so. But constantly throughout your day. Even when something dull is happening, your dress code speaks for you.

We have energy that gets pent up over time, and truly believe when you can confidently walk around, this energy has a place to flow through.

Ever noticed that some of the most well dressed people walk around with a radiant swagger. Head up high, completely relaxed in their outfit.

It’s because there is no energy blockage. It simply overflows.

How to find your style

This may sound counter intuitive, but you’re going to want to start with your health. If you look homeless before clothes are on, none will sort the problem out.

Things like:

  • Going to the gym
  • Eating healthier (Less processed foods)
  • Clearing your mental space
  • Showering properly
  • Grooming yourself
  • Getting sunlight
  • More sleep

Etc.

The above will 10x your progress in finding a style, because ultimately it comes down to the person beneath the clothing. Plus, when you get healthier, your taste in fashion may change. You could go from the college vibe to an old money look, as an example.

Sometimes, it doesn’t make sense to dress a certain way. Especially if your body type changes. So make sure to accommodate for that when you start seeing progress.

Back to clothes

  • Go through your current wardrobe and see what you really like. The pieces that always find their way into an outfit. Put them aside.
  • Then find those pieces that you avoid or can’t remember wearing for a while. These can be thrown or given away.
  • For the pieces that you’re on the fence about, organise them together. Once you find new pieces, try it out in your new outfits; if it doesn’t work well in any, it’s time for them to go.

Next up is to find people in your city or online who you could see yourself dressing like. Find pictures of them in outfits that you really love and refer back to these styles.

Once you get an inspiration bank full of different outfits. Go out, and intentionally choose timeless pieces that you want in your roster.

Things like jeans, plain T-shirts, simple jackets and accessories.

It doesn’t matter so much about whether these timeless pieces will work together, because the magic happens if you really love them. It doesn’t matter so much about them being different, only that you feel comfortable and it expresses a true version of you.

An easy way to keep it simple is monochrome. Blacks, greys and whites. These colours will swap in and out very easily.

But! Don’t let that hold you back, if you want to experiment with colour, go ahead and try. But always refer back to those images of people pulling off outfits well.

There are rules in fashion, and some are worth following. But for the most part, if you feel drawn to certain pieces that “shouldn’t” go on paper, go ahead and try it out. It’ll be more you anyway.

A side note to mention:

Never copy another person’s style piece for piece. No matter how hard you’ll try, it will feel inauthentic and fake. People who are in tune will notice it too. So instead of being a copycat, get inspired. Allow yourself to have role models who you use as inspiration and guidance.

There is more to copying than the above, but I won’t go into detail here. That will be for another time!

The spiritual side of clothing

As mentioned, being able to express yourself is a form of creativity. It makes you a better rounded person and also more confident in yourself. These have profound spiritual benefits in themselves.

But there is more too, and although more to do with science, can be connected to the metaphysical.

Colours, as we know, all vibrate at different frequencies and wavelengths. It’s the reason why we can see them.

But another reason is that our emotions are also frequencies. The more “negative” it is, the lower the frequency, such as anger, hate, sadness etc. Though, it’s worth mentioning that the emotions themselves aren’t bad per-se.

It’s the way you react to them which is, and how long you stay in these mental states for.

On top of this, because colours vibrate, they can affect our mood and wellbeing.

If you pair ultra marine blue and cadmium red, you will probably feel a bit unpleasant. The colours are both very bold and compete too much together.

Yet if you combined a baby blue with a pastel pink, it would make you feel calmer.

The above examples depend on how much there is. I’m not saying don’t wear red and blue, but wear it in small doses so it doesn’t strain the eye.

So with the very basic science lesson out of the way, you can coordinate with colour on how you’re feeling that day.

If you’re in a calm relaxed mood, try some muted blues with black or grey. Cheerful and happy, yellow or orange could do the trick. Or if you feel down, but want to help yourself out of it; instead of choosing a black outfit, opt for some bright colour.

Again, since you have colour on your person, that not only radiates outward. But inward too. It’s as if you absorb the frequencies of colour, in a similar way to how you sit in a small room, feeling claustrophobic.

Conclusion

You can dress the way your soul feels.

If you gravitate towards colour, wear more of it. Same goes for shades. Maybe you love abstract things, learn how to layer colours and match textures in order to create complex vibes.

When you begin to find a style that suits you and your soul, you begin to pull off things that would look silly on other people.

Though, the main point of this article was to express how you can get creative with clothes. It shows to others that you care about your appearance and everything that includes.

For example, what do you think of someone who has a suit on compared to a tracksuit?

Technically, these are made to be worn as an outfit. But give off completely different vibes.

Or, picture the typical dad. Probably wears straight leg jeans, a band or graphic tee, trainers from sports retailers and a walking jacket. If you know what I’m talking about, an image is in your mind.

It’s not that this look i s”bad” but more often than not, it lacks flow and ultimately a deep care about appearance. Most people who dress like this have a, take it or leave it attitude. But the deeper issue is that it’s a mirror of what’s on the inside.

Maybe you don’t care what others think. But is that a reflection of a self image problem? That you’d rather not confront because the package has piled up?

Again, no shade to the dads of the world or people without style. But people judge by looks, and looks are a way into someone’s personal space; whether they like it or not.

Anyway, I hoped this sparked you to think deeper about how you present yourself to others and ultimately the way you feel about yourself.

If it did, please feel free to share and comment on this article.
